We wanted to book the week with one driver. The thought of having to negotiate fares everyday was not appealing/something we wanted to do. He knows the area, roads and traffic. We saved time and frustration with Gabriel. I had been working with Gabriel for a month prior to our arrival. We sent him our planned itinerary and he sent back the cost for each trip (in pesos which was great). He even gave me advice on things such as how long we’d need at attractions! He is a kind family man who communicates the prior evening confirming pick up times and the next days activities. He has a strong command of the English language and makes every attempt to communicate when he doesn’t know the English word. He speaks Maya and Spanish, which helped us in the more rural areas to translate. If there was a pick up issue (he had a flat tire) a trusted secondary driver was sent. The first day he sent us a picture of his vehicle, along with the secondary drivers if needed. Safety is important. The vehicles are clean and well kept. We were overwhelmed with the choices of antijito places so we asked him to take us to his favourite place. It did not disappoint! Amazing food and people 🤗 We passed many shops that had beautiful items made in the area where he lives and asked him to take us to his choice of shops. Keep in mind these were additional stops. Since these stops were not part of our original itinerary we made sure that he even had the time and he sent the additional cost ahead of time like always. He was never far from the vehicle if we needed him. He is a trustworthy person to leave your souvenirs and personal property with (if he is waiting for you). Be fair. If he is waiting at an attraction for you, you should pay for parking if necessary. When he is not staying there waiting for you, be respectful and courteous. Message him 10-15 mins before you’d liked to be picked up. You are not always his only fare. Hands down he will be the first person we contact for our next trip to Tulum. It was much more enjoyable knowing he was out waiting for us and not having to wait for a bus load of people by using a big tour company bus to Chichen Itza. We asked for recommendations for local taco stands in Tulum and also took us there at the right time to also get some shopping done.
